ABSTRACT

This introduction provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the critical debates and arguments about globalization, arguing that rather than implying the current globalization as imperialism, homogenized through the West, the United States and English. It outlines the theoretical framework adopted in this research, states the research questions and provides an explanation of 'linguascapes,' a notion which underpins the analytical framework used in the book. Linguascapes are proposed as an alternative framework for understanding youth bi/multilingual repertoires in our globalized world, moving beyond the dichotomy between linguistic dystopia and linguistic diversity. The book deals with the research methodology adopted in this study, namely 'linguistic (n)ethnography.' It also outlines how the current study was carried out, drawing mainly on online and offline linguistic and cultural practices by popular music artists in Mongolia.
