ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the evolution of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 from the previous Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for water and sanitation, taking into account design mechanisms focused on universality, interdependence, and partnerships. The water and sanitation targets under the MDGs largely emphasized expanding access to improved services, with an emphasis on taps and toilets. The chapter outlines the main challenges moving forward with implementing SDG 6 and water-related targets. The main challenge in implementing the SDGs so that they support development and facilitate cooperation rather than conflict is contending with the inherent tension in their design. The chapter turns to a discussion of areas where the US can take steps globally through international cooperation and through partnerships to facilitate the SDGs' implementation. It concludes with a discussion of why it is important for the United States to implement the SDGs.
