ABSTRACT

Donna isn’t happy with her life. She thinks she is working too hard and earning too little. (Who doesn’t?) And she thinks her life will be better if she could find a wealthy man. This song illustrates one aspect of the marriage market – as someone who is wealthier, all else equal, will be a more appealing potential partner for women. 1 That said, there is a gender difference on the impact of wealth on appeal: 78% of never-married women say it is “very important” that a husband holds a “steady job,” compared to 48% of never-married men who say the same about women. 2
