ABSTRACT
The Goddess Asaka sings to Ti Moune that “Whatever you need, mama will provide.” In the show, the context is that the earth will provide everything that Ti Moune needs for her journey. This will allow Ti Moune to go about life without worrying about having life’s necessities. But instead of thinking about the earth, we could also think about the government. Economists, much like the population at large, debate how much of a safety net the government should provide. What can’t be debated is that the size of the safety net in the United States and many other countries has increased dramatically over the past century.
