ABSTRACT

Ursula, the sea witch, is singing about her dreams and desires. In doing so, we learn that she is not a very good person. What’s more, we also learn a bit about her unusual preferences. Ursula is already incredibly wealthy as her dad “divvied up the kingdom into two” and Ursula got half. But she desperately wants more, including “disgusting wealth” and “wild soirees.” Ursula seems different from most people (or in her case, sea-creatures), as most people exhibit a diminishing marginal utility of wealth. That means that once a person becomes wealthy enough, more money still is better, but any extra amount of money won’t mean as much. But Ursula doesn’t seem to follow the convention as she seems like she will only be happy when she has unlimited power.
