ABSTRACT

Journalism Design is about creating new journalistic futures. Given the pressure on news organisations from social platforms, this chapter argues that journalists need to take a proactive approach to new technologies. Rather than adapting what they do to new platforms, they should be creating the platforms. It challenges journalists to draw on their expertise to shape the future of communication technologies and proposes Journalism Design – a practice that encompasses the technological possibilities for journalism as well as the journalistic possibilities for technology – as a way to do this.
