ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the programme, which aims to enable teachers and support staff within schools to talk to children about mental health and explore their knowledge and understanding. The programme conveys important messages about how children can learn to take care of their mental health in the way that they learn to take care of physical health. The sessions in the programme will introduce some of the mental health conditions and encourages pupils to develop conditions and encourages pupils to develop the correct language to use, including some definitions. Many Year 4 pupils will not have heard the word 'confidentiality' or understand what it means, therefore it is a good idea to introduce it as part of the ground rules. It is important for the teacher to explain that talking about other people is not permitted within the lessons, and many of the suggested ground rules incorporate the essence of confidentiality.
