ABSTRACT

The mental health and emotional wellbeing education resource has been designed to be user-friendly and allow teaching staff to deliver effective lessons for Key Stage 2 pupils. This chapter covers the following areas: exploration of what mental health is and what it is not, including stigma and discrimination; mental ill health and what can go wrong as well as normal brain development; risk and resilience factors; and mental health promotion. When delivering the programme on mental health, issues may be raised that cause concern. For example, when discussing what might impact in a negative way upon mental health, a child may reveal that they are exposed to, or experiencing, domestic abuse or bullying. Due to the nature of the material within the lessons it is suggested that a 'Working Together Agreement' is created before the programme is delivered.
