ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a preferred solution design. It expands the functionality of the ‘ethical governor’ described in Arkin (2009). It draws on a broader range of ethical concepts and investigates a broader range of moral problem domains. Arkin focuses on deontology applied to the Laws of War. Here, a broader ethical theory is used to solve a broader range of ethical problems. The ethical theory is a hybrid that draws on elements of needs theory, contractualism, deontology, utilitarianism and virtue ethics. Besides military examples, moral decisions relating to traffic, bars, rescues, sacrifices and contracts are discussed.
