So why do all children who have been abused not go on to abuse? The simple answer is that the four out of five who do not, have met with enough human kindness.
It is kindness and concern that melts hating defences, far more than all the clever words, punishments or sanctions in the world. These things will never help a child like Harold move from hate back to grief.
