ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the therapies for living with aphasia that are continuing to develop and evolve at the aphasia centre. It suggests ways in which such a therapy service might be made flexible and responsive to peoples’ changing priorities and concerns, given the realities of living with aphasia. Drawing upon the experience of aphasia therapists working in different settings within the UK, the chapter describes ways in which therapies for living with aphasia might be implemented within different contexts. The therapist has the potential to become something of a navigator, sensitive to the client’s changing position and general direction, aware of the distance already covered and the waters ahead. Given the long-term nature of our involvement with clients, it is important to take regular stock of progress made, to refocus therapy or re-negotiate the nature and role of therapy.
