Eye and hand skills
There is a strong overlap between the sections on visual motor integration and handwriting as the two areas are interdependent. Handwriting is a high level execution skill that brings together a whole range of complex sensory and motor abilities. Despite the increasing technology for recording information in children's lives, written work will still have a vital role to play. This chapter describes requirements that underpin good handwriting but may present obstacles for those children who have not developed sound underlying sensory motor skills through play and other developmental opportunities. It illustrates exercises that are designed to improve the range of hand movements and strength. They can be group or individual activities 10 minute sessions three times weekly. These exercises are designed for preschool and older children with coordination challenges, strengthening pincer grip between fingers and thumb.
