ABSTRACT

A group programme will be only as effective as the assessment it is based on. When planning the programme, consider the timings for different activities. There are likely to be three prime activity times in a day — a session in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. An effective group programme requires a certain degree of selection. Bringing together groups of people with different interests and abilities can cause difficulty, and defeats the aim of activities being pleasurable, fun and enjoyable, and a time to feel positive. Having an awareness of group dynamics will help the activity organiser understand some of the reasons behind certain behaviours, and may shed light on methods for managing and even solving some of the difficulties. When an activity is held for the purpose of enjoying the process rather than worrying about the outcome, ensure that staff and families, for example, are made aware of this approach.
