ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the Not Just Talking intervention is that essentially all that's necessary is to open the door and show people that there is more to communication than just the spoken words. However, ideally all children should have the opportunity to experience the benefit of intervention before medication is even contemplated. The aim of the intervention is to improve the child's communication in all situations and with whoever she wishes to communicate. The pictures in the Not Just Talking intervention programme have been sorted according to their level of complexity of interpretation. A child automatically becomes able to predict as a result of constant practice of the interpretational strategy - to be found in the Not Just Talking Intervention Pack. Developing theory of mind is one of the main areas of change that will significantly affect the child's communication and behaviour.
