ABSTRACT

24Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells can be considered as a clean and reliable system for at least the next generation of power generation if we can circumvent the technical issues and minimize the related cost of stack components. Understanding the functional characteristics of the integral stack components of (PEM) fuel cell stack can be a significant contribution to fuel cell development and commercialization. The present chapter aims to review critically the integral stack components of PEM fuel cells. The chapter also emphasizes the limitations encountered with the current electrode materials, gas diffusion material, and also the durability of these stack materials. A snapshot in the advancement of electrode materials and the economics of the stack components is also envisaged.
