ABSTRACT

Running a business with purpose is essential to achieving exceptional results, but like all affairs that involve the heart, certain red flags may crop up along the way. Many purpose-driven organizations tend to come out of the gate thinking like a traditional charity. They are so focused on the cause that they forget what they need to do to fulfill their purpose. The only way to institute real change is to sustain your organization through profits. The pitfall of burnout is real, and it costs organizations a substantial amount of money and business disruption. It manifests itself in low people engagement, high turnover, poor product quality, health-related leave, and increased insurance premiums. Purpose-based organizations tend to attract and hire very smart and driven people. As the organization grows, these people can believe that they can do any role well, even leading people, because they are so passionate about the organization's purpose.
