ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the most likely group of students one will teach, undergraduate students, and the impact of their cultural and technological background on their expectations and the teaching practice. It explores the characteristics of the average 18 to 21-year-old undergraduate, and the knock-on impact on their expectations of attending university. The chapter examines the key characteristics of the undergraduate student population today and the consequences for student expectations regarding higher education (HE) and those who provide/facilitate it. It outlines a small number of ways in which one can navigate and manage student expectations within this environment. The chapter intends to provide important context for some of the demands and pressures faced by those teaching in universities today.
