ABSTRACT

Teachers like to work with leaders who believe in them and who trust them to do their jobs. They like those in charge to give them the benefit of the doubt. When faced with problems, they appreciate leaders who will withhold judgment until more information is gathered. One important trust builder is assuming the best in others or assuming positive intent. Assuming positive intent means that reader will wait for more information before they react in a negative way. This mind-set can help reader become more trustworthy. Assuming positive intent is a strategy that can help them in many potentially negative situations. When we assume the worst in others, we typically make quick judgments based on limited information. These negative thoughts often lead to anger and frustration. By having this negative mind-set, we start finding reasons to confirm our conclusions. Consequently, our interactions with others result in conflict and invoke defensiveness; we make little progress toward resolution.
