ABSTRACT

Leaders who convey the attitude of "get over it" can harm trust with their impatience. When the leader communicates to teachers, parents, and students "to get over something", she is sending a message: the leader is insensitive to the larger issues, unwilling to listen, and not empathetic. Leaders with the mantra "just get over it" sometimes are proud of their expeditious action and consider this no-nonsense approach a sign of their strong leadership. This pride might blind them to the fact that their actions are trust busters instead of trust builders. Leaders with the "get over it" mind-set are likely lacking in qualities that build trust, such as patience, empathy, helpful listening, and concern for others. When a leader changes the trust-busting behavior of "get over it" to one of listening and caring about the issues and concerns of others, the leader can build trust with others.
