ABSTRACT

Cape No.7 is set in the present day in a small town in southern Taiwan, Hengchun. It is a sleepy seaside town with a beautiful beach. The director and scriptwriter, Wei Te-sheng, chose Hengchun as the backdrop of this film precisely because of the interesting contrast the town offers. The film Seediq Bale depicts the historical Wushe Incident, which occurred in central Taiwan in 1930. Mona Rudo led 300 tribal men fighting against 3,000 Japanese troopers. While there were victories, Mona's people paid a harsh price. Kano is set in Taiwan in the 1940s, during the colonial period. A Japanese soldier, Josha Hiromi, is on his way to the Pacific War and makes a specific detour to visit a small town on the island, Jiayi, where the Kano baseball team is based. 'Kano' is the shortened Japanese pronunciation of the Jiayi High School of Agriculture in southern Taiwan.
