ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the following research questions: how do young people perceive the image of the sassy girl, how do young women and men make sense of their own or their girlfriends' violence, how do they do their gender, sexuality, and intimacy through aggressive behaviors and interactions, how do young women negotiate the multiple expectations and demands that their boyfriends, parents, and the society impose upon them. It shows that violence permeates extensively the different dimensions of young adults' dating lives: among the 43 participants, 39 had experienced dating violence of some sort, including physical assault (29), psychological aggression (31), and sexual coercion (17), either having inflicted it or having received it, and including both minor and serious violence. The chapter focuses on physical violence and psychological violence, and how young men and women do their gender through their violent behaviors. It extends the understanding of gender-based violence in its intersection with other unequal social-structural arrangements.
