ABSTRACT

This chapter provides how the psychological investigation of learning contributes to the study of coaching psychology for learning. It focuses on the theories of coaching and coaching psychology in order to see what they mean for learning. The chapter reviews the origins, definitions, psychological principles and theories of coaching and coaching psychology as well as the structure and characteristics of effective coaching models. It describes three perspectives of coaching psychology that are particularly useful for enhancing learning: cognitive coaching, solution-focused coaching and narrative coaching. The humanistic, person-centred theory and the positive psychology perspective together constitute a meta-theory of coaching psychology. Coaching can include the use of counselling or direct instructional procedures in the service of explicit goals. The chapter deals with a call for further research on the relationship of coaching and learning and presents studies of coaching psychology and learning in secondary and medical schools.
