ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a systems model of Coaching for Learning in order to clarify the relationship between coaching and learning in secondary education. It proposes the definition of Coaching for Learning (CfL) in order to theorise the relationship between coaching and learning. Coaching for Learning is a participatory system indicating an evolving learning relationship between learning coaches (e.g., teachers, parents or peers) and learners through various modes of coaching relationships. From a systems approach and participatory perspective, the model of CfL includes a range of interrelated factors internal and external to the learner and to the coach, which shape their interactions and co-learning in place and in time. It demonstrates the core characteristics of a living system with its distinctive participative nature. Knowledge construction is the key element that differentiates CfL and coaching from personal growth or executive management.
