ABSTRACT

In 1971, following contentious elections from the year before, Pakistan committed genocide in East Pakistan. Over a nine-month period, as many as one million people were killed, and hundreds of thousands of women and girls were raped. Beginning in 1981, the Guatemalan military committed genocide against members of Guatemala’s Mayan population. At its peak, 80,000 people were killed over an eighteen-month period. Prior to and during both genocides, the US provided Pakistan and Guatemala with material and diplomatic support with knowledge of their intent to commit genocide. Therefore, the US is responsible for complicity in genocide.
