ABSTRACT

It is entirely our decision whether or not to try again to get pregnant, and when we want to do that. In the past, advice from doctors was always to try again as swiftly as possible, with the mistaken belief that another pregnancy and, hopefully, a new baby, would distract from a past loss. While this can work for some people, it ignores that not everyone that experiences miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or stillbirth gets pregnant again quickly, or stays pregnant. This chapter covers different options we may have around trying again. This might include: doing absolutely nothing right now, and seeing in the future how we feel about having sex and trying to conceive; agreeing together we want to try and conceive quickly and to resume having sex and/or fertility treatment; and seeking medical help and/or fertility advice if we are worried about our mental or physical health, have had recurrent losses, or found it difficult to conceive.
