ABSTRACT

Reminiscence helps the carer explore this world and thus helps them understand the client’s needs and behaviour by seeing the world from their perspective. People also reminisce to boost their self–esteem. When people begin to doubt themselves, they need to try to remember all the things they are good at. Working with people’s memories in these situations has a positive therapeutic function. In order to individualise care in an institution and treat people according to their unique needs, anyone need to know them. One of the best things a carer can do is to make reminiscence personal by creating a scrapbook of the client’s life. Reminiscence also allows the carer to uncover significant personal events which can then form the focus of further reminiscence work with individuals. Hold reminiscence cookery sessions using older and familiar recipes and methods, followed by a tasting session.
