ABSTRACT

Equally important is the recognition and maintenance of individuality in the face of dementia. The concept of validation suggests that a point is reached in the progression of dementia when the short-term memory is no longer useable. Person-centred care denies the usual dementia stereotype and focuses on the strengths and individuality of the client. It is a positive and hopeful approach to dementia care. The use of person-centred care and improving the quality of life for residents, especially those suffering dementia, can be demanding, time consuming and very hard work. Finally, despite the increasing volume of research and academic output relating to dementia, it remains a fact that the single most important aspect of dementia care is the attitude of the carers.
