ABSTRACT

Teachers are able to formatively assess students both through pictorial representation and a brief summary of learning. This is especially helpful and important when introducing this type of formative assessment to the students for the first time. Sculpture certainly is a major part of the Visual Arts, so it works very naturally in this subject area. In a face-to-face professional development session that is approximately one hour in length: After everyone has had a turn discuss why this is an Arts strategy, and in particular a modified version of the Postcard Summary. Conduct walkthroughs as staff implement the arts formative assessment strategies over the week. Ask teachers to choose one of the corners and then use that formative assessment strategy to summarize their experiences with the arts formative assessment strategies they used over the last two weeks.
