ABSTRACT

Ask teachers to reflect on their own experiences with formative assessment strategies prior to coming to the professional development session. A good text to use to develop the questions is Formative Assessment Leadership: Identify Plan, Apply, Assess, Refine. One should also use materials provided through the school district around formative and summative assessment practices. Before the session take opaque Easter eggs-or envelopes-that have some sort of identifiable marker that shows they are part of the professional development session and place one question in each egg, envelope, or other container. Put the containers around the professional development space-these can be hidden or out in the open. The idea is to get the colleagues "up and moving." In a face-to-face professional development session that is approximately one hour in length: Conduct walkthroughs as teachers implement the Select Response formative assessment strategies over the further weeks.
