ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how culture influences social behaviours and focuses on cooperation and cooperative behavior, especially in dyadic social interaction contexts, because of their importance in social efficiency and functioning. It begins with a discussion of culture, providing a working definition of it that provides a framework with which to understand its influence on cooperation. The chapter reviews recent cross-cultural and intercultural research, highlighting the importance of cultural influences on cooperation. It focuses on recent intercultural research on cooperation that highlights the important role of emotions, because one of the core functions of emotions is the enhancing of social bonds and relationships, and the most recent intercultural research on cooperation has linked cooperation in intercultural interactions with emotions. The chapter also discusses how the display of one's emotions and perceptions of other's emotions are influenced by culture, providing a platform for understanding how they are associated with social and cooperative behaviors and interactions in different cultures.
