ABSTRACT

Ground level beds facilitate the use of greenhouses with lower eaves and, consequently, overall height, an advantage if external shading systems are considered. Grafting houses built with structurally strong floors, such as concrete or no-fines concrete acting as ground level beds, can offer opportunities for a range of materials handling systems and maximum flexibility in use of ground area. The simplest beds for grafts which are cold callused at ambient temperatures within the structure are marked out areas on existing earth floors. Grafting beds comprise designated areas separated by pathways, dimensions adjusted to provide best space utilisation for poly-tents or other enclosures. The disadvantage of low-heat storage capacity for benches, compared with the temperature mitigating effect of ground level beds. Electrical heating cables of various types have been available for several decades and offer a reliable and safe form of heat source.
