ABSTRACT

Conservation of cultivated plants requires less significant input than for plants in the wild. The National Trust is the largest membership organisation in the UK with a broad mandate to preserve heritage sites in all aspects, including their associated plants. There are two major aspects of plant conservation strategy: those concerned with conservation in cultivation and those in the wild. There are two major aspects of plant conservation strategy: those concerned with conservation in cultivation and those in the wild. The widely preferred method of propagation in virtually all conservation situations is by seed. While in vitro propagation techniques may be ideal in a number of situations and cuttings propagation can have an important role, grafting has qualities making its use at certain stages an extremely useful tool. Grafting senile scion wood onto rootstocks with juvenile characteristics induces juvenility in scion extension growth.
