ABSTRACT

The first part of the chapter discusses the concepts of power, compliance, and the three power mechanisms: legitimacy, coercion, and reward-seeking. It highlights their use in the relevant literatures and the way they are understood in this book. The second part of the chapter provides an overview of the relevant literatures and the gaps this study addresses. It particularly highlights that despite the increasing academic interest in legitimacy in peacebuilding studies, the concept of compliance remains both under-researched and disconnected from legitimacy. This chapter hence provides an overview of the gaps in the literatures this study seeks to fill.
