ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comparative assessment of the two case studies. It highlights the similarities between the cases and details patterns that may be relevant beyond these case studies. These include the determining role of officers’ ranks for the relevance of the compliance mechanisms and the importance of the local police forces’ chain of command in effecting compliance through coercion and reward-seeking. It further shows the differences between the cases, recognising the importance that local contextual factors can play, such as the politicisation of the police in Bosnia, and the role resistance played in affecting compliance.
