ABSTRACT

Many ethnic minorities in China profess religions other than those of the Han. In the northwest, Islam is a major influence among the Hui and Uygur, which are the second and third largest nationalities. 1 Lamaism is the religion of the Tibetans and Mongolians as well as of a number of smaller ethnic groups. In the south, Mahayana-Buddhism has a foothold. Animism, animatism, and Shamanism still exist among numerous minor peoples. 2 This intertwining of religion and nationality makes the religious question a touchy one.
