ABSTRACT

The foreigners stationed along the coast were helping the Ch'ing soldiers to guard the city. Armed with foreign guns, the grandsons of turtles hid themselves from view inside the city battlements. Whenever they spotted a shadow on the outside, they would shoot it down. Thus the Nien were powerless against Chiao-chou. Having learned that this was a game being played by foreigners, Nien soldiers Fu Ch'eng-ku and Chang Heng were incensed. Leading five hundred Nien soldiers, they galloped off to the moat outside the western gate of Chiao-chou city. Thereupon Fu Ch'eng-ku, standing not far from the moat, waved a yellow banner, "Fire!" Arrows from the bows of the five hundred Nien soldiers descended on the city wall like rain. By the time the chief of the foreigners learned about the incident, Fu Ch'eng-ku, Chang Heng, and their five hundred Nien brothers were already back at their base, eating steamed dumplings.
