ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors address safety and inclusion through their curriculum, such as through positive representations of LGBTQ people, their contributions and accomplishments, and the evaluation of oppressions and inequities. They take a sociocultural approach to curriculum, asking educators to utilize real-life of social experiences as the textual content for discussions, activities, and assignments in middle school. The authors examine to build safe spaces, and then evaluate the safety of spaces at school and in their communities. They also examine the binaries in relation to multiple identity communities in order to inform their support of LGBTQ and gender diversity inclusion in school. One way to support LGBTQ and gender diversity inclusion is through teaching critical perspective taking. Intersectionality is a theory we can use to understand oppression in relation to identity differences.
