ABSTRACT

Changing a culture is essentially about changing the attitudes of the people making up the team, changing the vision of each member of a unit team until that team is truly working in harmony towards a common end. It is an awesome task providing contentment for perfect strangers, but the absolute responsibility for this lies with the home manager who must motivate and encourage all staff to provide a rewarding lifestyle for the residents in their care. Some of the staff were beginning to see the value of activities and the benefit to residents and were actively encouraging residents to attend, but a few believed that, by encouraging independence, the residents had become more vocal and demanding, which made their job harder. Staff need to consider what they are actually doing when they look after elderly people in a care home.
