ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to contextualise hyperlocal journalism by examining the state of journalism, including the collapse of traditional models of journalism. The chapter investigates the circumstances that have triggered the push for hyperlocal journalism and how this has created a ‘perfect storm’ for this kind of journalism to develop. The chapter presents the need for a start-up business model in the hyperlocal field. It concludes by examining the role of the audience in driving this form of journalism. The chapter features an introduction, literature review of contemporary journalism practice, and examples of audience-driven hyperlocal journalism.
