ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the first of three hyperlocal journalism case studies. The case study focusses on a hyperlocal journalism start-up in New Zealand, Neighbourly, that has involved the production of an app to engage local audiences and present a platform for delivering news. This app has enabled the largest newspaper group in New Zealand to breathe life into a flagging general news round by using the digital platform to gather hyperlocal news and then publish it across daily newspapers and a national online aggregator.
