ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the theories and practical application of the adaptive response model. Adaptive response is a model of caring for someone with dementia in a group living environment, but it has principles that can be applied away from this setting. Dementia acts as a stressor to the internal system of an affected individual by its alteration in perceptions of the external environment and therefore the individual's reactions to it. The effects on dementia of internal rhythms and their alterations precipitated by stress have yet to be fully explored. However, because this will entail internal temperature monitoring and will need full resident agreement and medical supervision, at present it is not a priority in dementia research or funding. Extremely high proportions of people with dementia are reported to have problems with sleeping or with night-time routines. Adaptive response is designed to be developed. It says there is a better way.
