ABSTRACT

Educators need to prepare Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) users for the choices ahead of them as they move from children's and young people's services into adult services. Universities, colleges and institutes of technology and vocational schools come under the umbrella of higher education. University should be the aspiration for AAC users who are academically able. Where an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) is in place, the local authority should plan a smooth transition to higher education before ceasing the EHCP. Workplaces are required to comply with the Equality Act 2010 in order to make reasonable adjustments. The British Assistive Technology Association (BATA) provides up-to-date information about assistive technology in the workplace. Adults with Learning Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) who have a mental health condition or behaviour which challenges should have a person-centred care and support plan. Communication partners became less dominating in conversation and provided more communication opportunities for the AAC user.
