ABSTRACT

Stories in a sense are 'the fabric of society' as events and rules and customs are passed on from generation to generation. Sadly, much of this has been taken over by television where live interactive storytelling becomes a passive, spectator activity; many viewers feel quite intimidated by the skills of the stars telling children's stories. Some parents hand over the storytelling activities to CDs and DVDs rather than tell stories themselves. This chapter includes the idea of documentaries because for some people it is less scary than the idea of storytelling. Creating a documentary about a person or a place is something readily grasped by many people, as they see documentaries on television. However, all of it is storytelling in some shape or form and by encouraging it people will gain in confidence and improve their social skills.
