ABSTRACT

A positive working alliance must be established between the group and its leader in the first session; and this can be achieved by discussing and agreeing on its direction and specific aims. In the absence of such an alliance, cooperation from individual members cannot be guaranteed. Experience has shown that negative feelings may later be transferred to the leader, or certain group members may resort to 'acting out'. Naturally, the level of discussion and the flexibility of the contract must depend upon the type of setting and the nature of the clients. If the verbal skills of the group are limited, it may be helpful to use 'action method' to work out the contract. If this is the case, then a smooth transition must be achieved between this introductory activity and the rest of the session.
