ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author considers setting up and running social skills groups as this has to be his favourite type of intervention. The use of 1:1 interventions is appropriate to support children with social skills difficulties and will inevitably be a part of educators' intervention in some shape or form. Social Stories™ were created by Carol Gray in 1991 for students with autism and have become increasingly popular as an instructional strategy but can be used with children and adults who are not autistic. A Social Story™ is a short story that has been written in a specific style and format. It describes a social situation and presents information in a structured and consistent manner. Many people believe that social behaviour should be taught in groups rather than in a one-to-one situation and that the group forum is an ideal one in which to learn about, change or practise any behaviour which is associated with social interaction and communication.
