ABSTRACT

Students who use spoken English only or Sign Supported English will learn the several English clarification skills. These are 'please can people say that slower' or, more simply, 'slower please', 'please can people say that louder' or, more simply, 'louder please', 'what does that mean?', 'people need to lip read please'. The aim is for the accurate and intelligible production of these phrases, so that they can be used outside the smiLE Therapy session with such confidence that they will be easily understood. Each student is filmed individually doing a set barrier drawing game with one practitioner to see whether the student has any of the target skills already. Using the 'freeze' drama technique from the role play in other modules focus on the expression of the practitioner who received the inappropriate request. In this module, generalisation of the clarification skills may start as early as the second group session.
