ABSTRACT

The practitioners who work with the student should know that the student has the confidence and communicative intent; that is, the understanding that they are going into the shop for the purpose of communicating to buy an item and then to leave. For students who are ready to be more challenged, start introducing different items for them to buy in role play. For students who are new to the idea of being independent communicators in the community outside school and who lack confidence, Module 2 Entering and leaving an office may be best as a starting point because communication takes place within the safe familiarity of the school. Secondary-aged students and young adults who are: deaf, deaf and have needs additional to their deafness, hearing and have a range of communication difficulties due to learning difficulties, specific language impairment, physical disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders or a stammer.
