ABSTRACT

The student goes to the school office to request an item from the secretary. The secretary is on the phone, so the student has to wait appropriately. The student makes their request. The student then has to refuse politely and repeat their request. Module 2 Entering and leaving an office is a prerequisite module for those students who are unconfident or who need to take smaller steps because of their learning needs. Practitioners should be confident that the student has the skills to make a request and politely refuse with an adult who does not sign or is not familiar with their communication needs. The skills included in the Communication Skills Checklist for the SmiLE Therapy module are shown in the checklist. For deaf students, choose a MOPS with no signing skills, so the student cannot sign to this person and needs to adapt their communication accordingly.
