ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the therapy collaboratively, with the three of people planning together, running sessions jointly, and running staff and parent groups together. In addition, Hannah and Anne met weekly to discuss how the students were progressing. This joint approach was ideal in supporting each student's individual needs, and later for skills to be generalised. The six students in parent's group all attended the same class within the Special Needs Department. Their ages ranged from 16 to 19 years, and they included students whose communication needs resulted from learning difficulties, Down's syndrome and autistic spectrum disorders. Anne went on to share her view that most of the students had habits which were still acceptable for teenagers, but which would become a great disadvantage to them in the adult world. Hannah and Anne brought their knowledge of the students' communication needs, and Anne additionally brought along a wealth of experience working as a special needs teacher.
