ABSTRACT

SmiLE Therapy was originally developed for deaf students. The modules were designed for students who communicate in British Sign Language, in spoken English and in any combination of these modalities. Practitioners have several factors to consider when deciding which students could be grouped together. These include how many students to have in the group, their learning needs, attention skills, likely pace of learning, mode of communication and any behavioural needs, and whether it is feasible to group students of different ages from different classes in your school or workplace. The in-school modules are the modules generally recommended for primary-aged students of 6 to 11 years. When students aged 11 start secondary school, they may be in a group where they don't all know each other because students have probably joined from a variety of primary schools. SmiLE Therapy can be carried out as part of an intensive or a themed week in a school.
